First appeared in a limited edition of 250 copies (front colophon). The list of illustrations includes only the 8 full page charcoal drawings, but each chapter is headed by a fine green and black illustration, numerous maps throughout the text and on endpapers. Loomis had a long career writing about yachts, racing, and sea travels, based on his trans-atlantic crossings as well as coastal journeys and travels through the Panama canal. Experience combined with journalistic skill and strong opinions made him famous beyond his sailing accomplishments. This is his best-known book. One might search for information about the recipient of this dedication in his extensive papers, located at the Mystic Seaport Museum of America and the Sea, which holds correspondence from the period as well as clippings about this book.
