"Many a Watchful Night (1944) is an attempt to capture the emotions of war as Brown had experienced them from his vantage point on [Vice-Admiral] Kirk's staff during the preparations for the Normandy invasion and the invasion itself, this time while on the flagship Augusta" (DAB, suppl. 8, 1988). Brown was a Kentucky-born, Harvard-educated drama critic. After graduation from college he and his friend Donald M. Oenslager toured European theaters for a year. He visited Europe again in 1928, and visited Russia. Brown became a successful critic in newspapers, books, and after the war on the radio.

In the 1930s Kästner was a librarian then Gerhart Hauptmann's secretary, then again after 1950 director of the library in Wolfenbüttel. For two and a half years he was a prisoner-of-war in Egypt. According to an advertisement: "Seine Erlebnisse in der Kriegsgefangenschaft schildert das „Zeltbuch von Tumilad" (Insel-Verlag), begeistert aufgenommen und von der Kritik mit Carossas „Rumänischem Tagebuch" und St. Exupérys „Wind, Sand und Sterne" verglichen.".
