Loewe (meteorologist and explorer 1895-1974), emigrated to Australia), famous survivor of the Wegener expedition to Greenland during which he lost toes to frostbite, while his companions Wegener and Villumsen perished, as described in the text. Loewe not only edited the second half of the work, providing connecting text between fragments left by Wegener (according to the preface), he also composed several narrative sections.
