32623. Holz, Arno, 1863-1929. Die Blechschmiede. Dresden, Sibyllen-Verlag, 1921, xxviii, 515pp., very good large black 1/4 cloth with printed boards, the spine cloth a bit fragile, the cover and foredges lightly worn or darkened, $65
The cover title is more expansive than the title-page: Die Blechschmiede: Pandivinium, Pandaemonium und Panmysterium. - Holz, whose social criticism and technical innovations made him a revolutionary figure in the 1890s, and who is credited with preparing the ground for Döblin, was history by the 1920s. In her comments in 1922 Babette Deutsch draws an arc between Holz and the expressionists: Ehrenstein, Klemm, Heym, Werfel, but the vitality lies with the latter group: "In Phantasus he strives to give us, in a miscellany of fragments, the many and various avatars of his wandering psyche. The scale of this work appears to be congenial to Holz, for it was followed by another huge extravaganza, Blechschmiede, purposing to synthetize the whole modern world as Phantasus purposes to synthetize the poet's entire consciousness." - But from the less engaged standpoint of the mid-1960s Erich Funke judged the Blechschmiede, in the version of the Holz Werkausgabe to be his "satirical masterpiece" ("vielstimmigen, satirischen Meisterwerk").

4228. Holz, Arno, 1863-1929. Das ausgewählte Werk. Berlin: Deutsches Verlagshaus Bong & Co., 1919, 1.-10. Tausend, 382pp., very good half-pergament, purple and green collage boards, scuffed in one spot on front, otherwise very good, with gold decorated spine very pretty, $17
