Author was mathematics professor at the General Motors Institute, Flint Michigan. The book deals with iterative solutions to mathematical problems, as suited to the new era of computers. "The solution of some equations may be obtained by direct methods. A direct method is one which will produce an exact answer after a finite number of operations. The solution of the quadratic equation by the quadratic formula is an example of a direct method. [...] Another approach is an approximation technique .... [which] uses a starting guess and successively improves on it with a repetition of similar steps. This is an iterative technique. Iterative techniques are useful in programming digital computers for two important reasons: (1) The use of the same set of instructions repetitively saves space in the computer's memory. (2) The round-off errors made are minimized, whereas in direct methods they compound themselves.".

Bryn Mawr College April 18th, 1922. Bryn Mawr College, 21pp., stapled PAPERBACK, original printed cover, good copy BUT with vertical fold mark on covers and throughout the pamphlet, $400
Quite scarce lecture by Whitehead, given at the 1922 meeting of the American Mathematical Society in honor of one of the first recognized women mathematicians in the US (see Patricia Kenschaft in A Century of Mathematics in America, vol. 3). It was reprinted already in his The Principle of Relativity with Applications to Physical Science (1922). Hocking reports Whitehead's son as claiming that this visit to Bryn Mawr marked the point when the philosopher fell in love with America. In 1924, he accepted a position at Harvard. A substantial lecture discussing "some general principles of mathematical physics" applied to the problem of the gravitational field. He concludes: "My whole course of thought presupposes the magnificent stroke of genius by which Einstein and Minkoowski assimilated time and space. It also presupposes the general method of seeking tensor or invariant relations as general expressions for the laws of the physical field, a method due to Einstein. But the worst homage we can pay to genius is to accept uncritically formulations of truths which we owe to it.".
