The history of theology places him amongst the later students of the Tübingen school around 1850 who attempted to replace external systematics with a concept of the organic unity of moral theology (Roger Aubert). This resistance to superficial positivism raised Deutinger into the pantheon of 19th century heroes calling for reprints in the 1930s and respectful treatment by modernizing Catholics such as Karl Muth.
