Kloss gained renown as a pioneer in the sociology of minority languages and was active from the 1930s on in various Institutes for the study of languages, nationalities, and Auslandsinstitute. In the 1950s he became interested in Rudolf Steiner. The 1937 book was the object of controversy between Kloss and his critics, which can be followed in Christopher Hutton's book Linguistics and the Third Reich.
