An important antidote to the intellectual histories of Germany's failed modernization, which were being written in the late 1950s and early 1960s in the US. Walker rediscovers German communities in the period before the nation-state and describes their eventual breakdown. The 1850s saw supra-local economic and political forces, railroads, banking, military necessity challenging the independent "home towns" until they "finally broke through the hometown walls" (408). Perhaps without intending it, Walker writes in a conservative German tradition (complete with a final chapter on "Death and Transfiguration"), informing us about the challenge to German identity-formation arising in the late 19th century, to reimplant pluralistic identities in a competitive modern society.
