10335. Adamson, Robert, 1852-1902. Fichte. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, 1881, 222pp. port. 18 cm., small, worn brown cloth, good reading copy but binding a bit wobbly in the middle, pencil notes on rear endpapers, $17
Philosophical classics for English readers. Adamson studied in Edinburgh and Heidelberg and was a popular philosophy teacher in Manchester, Aberdeen and Glasgow. Most of his articles on the history of philosophy appeared in the Encyclopedia Britannica, with the exception of short books on Kant and Fichte. Henry Jones reported in his 1902 obituary that Adamson had been working on a book on "Kant and the Modern Naturalists" - "for both of which he was, in my opinion, equipped better than any other philosophic scholar in the English-speakingworld." According to an 1881 review, Fichte had been known in England more for his politics than his philosophy. Adamson's was the first book to deal seriously with his philosophy. D. A. Rees had high praise for Adamson: "a far-sighted thinker whose positive work is, perhaps, as suggestive as that of any of his contemporaries.".

Morgan jr. wrote in The Philosophical Review 42: "a scholarly, sympathetic work, with unusual insight into the difficulties of Dilthey's position. According to Eisler, influenced by Fechner and interested in social teleology. Mostly noted as historian of educational practice, for his correspondence with Tönnies and for a 1909 autobiography providing insights into the university system before World War I. The British reviewer, W. Wallace (Mind, 1889) was impressed by the fluent writing style, accessible to the general reader, and the absence of ponderous idealistic ethics from the mid-19th century. Discussions of the social question, women's emancipation, duty and conscience, are praised by another reviewer. An interesting question is raised: why were there so many Ethics in Germany after 1880 and so few before then?.

Already in 1859, the American public could read in the AJE about the progressives of the 17th century, who opposed "vain, lifeless, memory-cramming" and encouraged "the understanding of the child in proportion as they omitted the drilling of memory" (Reuben Palm, The Origins of Progressive Education, Elem.School Jnl., 1940), a perennial chestnut.

Following Husserl rather than Barth and noting inflluence of Cusanus on Schleiermacher. Richard Crouter wrote: "the boldest treatment of Schleiermacher's theological method and defense of his doctrine of God to appear in English. His argument, restricted to The Christian Faith, draws heavily from Husserl and contends that Schleiermacher is doing a phenomenological theology" (JAAR, 1979). Robert F. Brown also praised the comparison with Cusanus: "Williams argues persuasively that by reading Schleiermacher as intending something similar to Cusanus's formulation, we can see how his God can be fully related to the world, yet also transcendent and free in that his relatedness does not make him dependent on the world. Also the divine attributes can be grasped as dialectical constituents of God's being, not simply as modes of relation. This ingenious reading via Cusanus makes Schleiermacher's doctrine of God reasonably consistent and displays it to advantage as a third alternative to classical monopolar theism and recent process theologies" (JOR 1979).
