In his obituary for Wilhelm Wetz, Friedrich Meinecke describes Wetz' 1891 critique of ten Brink as a key step on the way from the empiricism of the 1850s-80s and towards an international comparative literary history. Ten Brink's appointment in Strassburg marks the take-off of English philology in Germany, according to Richard Utz, who observes that his History of English Literature introduced "a more explicit way to celebrate popular beliefs of Volksseele, Volksgeist, and Volkscharakter" and cross the lines between academics and a popular audience.
