Hughes knew many of the German emigrés and he mentions or thanks several in his foreword: George Lichtheim, Lewis Coser, and Karl Loewenstein, "the last direct link to Max Weber's circle, who first introduced me as a senior at Amherst College to the universe of German social thought. He also acknowledges the importance of books by two of his own Ph.D. students: Martin Jay, The Dialectical Imagination and Paul A. Robinson, The Freudian Left. Hughes deals here with authors such as Wittgenstein, Borgese, Mannheim, Fromm, Gaetano Salvemini, Franz Neumann, Hannah Arendt, Horkheimer, Adorno, Heinz Hartmann, Erik Erikson, Thomas Mann, Paul Tillich. But the interest for historians will certainly be in following the transformations, rather than the "migration" of German "social thought" along this path from Max Weber to Karl Loewenstein to H. Stuart Hughes to Martin Jay.
