This two-volume work, first published in 1846, founded the discipline in German-speaking Europe, basing it on a holistic philosophy. The book was a required standard in Vienna, and Schnitzler reports that his father gave him a copy when he graduated, which "blieb vorerst ungelesen" (Jugend in Wien). Hyrtl also published an account of medical terminology borrowed from Arabic.
