Choosing Water lilies

It is important to keep the scale of your water garden in mind when choosing your water lilies. While it is possible to grow larger lilies in small pots to stunt them, it is like growing forest trees for foundation plants. Possible, but not very satisfactory.

Water lilies come in more then just different colors. Their natural size varies enormously. The shape, size and number of the petals varies too.

One point to keep in mind is that the blooms usually only open bankers hours, 10 am. to 3 pm. and each bud opens 3 days in a row. (If you work, a 'pond cam' makes lots of sense! Or you might try night blooming tropical water lilies but these are all very large.)
 James Brydon hardy water lily

'James Brydon' , a most beautiful small to medium sized hardy water lily which requires only 4 hours of full sun to flower.
