Artist: Hüsker Dü
Title: Statues/Amusement **out of print**
Format: 7" (45 RPM)
Label: Reflex Records
Catalog Number: Reflex A [not shown anywhere]
Date Recorded: Oct 1980
Release Date: Jan 1981
Notes: Highly collectible and priced accordingly. 2500 copies
pressed. Artwork by Grant Hart. An article in the
Sep 1992 Record Collector identifies this as "Reflex
38285," asserts that only 1000 were pressed and
			mentions a lyric sheet insert.

For notes on the recording sessions, see the
Blackberry Way Outtakes" entry in the "Demos,
			Outtakes, Rehearsals" section.

The band name derives from a children's board game
that was popular in the 60s and 70s.

Title: Land Speed Record
Format: Album
Label: New Alliance Records
Catalog Number: NAR-007
Date Recorded: 15 Aug 1981
Release Date: Jan 1982
Reissues: SST-195 (12", 1987)
			SST CD 195 (CD, 1988)
Notes: Original release came with lyric sheet/tour dates
insert and is fairly collectible, but not all that
difficult to find. According to this 1984 Bob Mould
interview, the initial pressing was 6000 copies. A
second New Alliance pressing featured a cover
printed on lighter stock and no insert sheet.

The third pressing, also on New Alliance (1984?),
bore the additional inscription "Marketed by SST
Records" on the back cover, featured a plastic
rather than paper inner sleeve, and again lacked
			the insert.

The 1987 SST reissue wiped the recording date and
New Alliance references from the back cover and
put the SST logo and UPC bars in the vacated space.
The CD version does not have individual track IDs
for the songs, offering instead only two "tracks"
(one for each side of the original album).

See the artwork page for a more detailed visual
			presentation highlighting the various differences.

Format: 7" single
Label: New Alliance Records
Catalog Number: NAR-010
Date Recorded: Feb 1982
Release Date: May 1982
Notes: Not very many of these were pressed and it is the
most collectible Hüsker vinyl release. 2500 copies
pressed, some of which were reportedly "lost" in
California. Recorded at Blackberry Way, Minneapolis.
An unknown number of copies included a lyric insert.

Title: Meathouse [or "Meat House"] **out of print**
Format: Cassette compilation
Label: Version Sounds
Catalog Number: Unknown
Date Recorded: Unknown
Release Date: Jul(?) 1982
Notes: Midwest compilation (Xenia OH). Rumored to include
studio versions of four tracks from Land Speed
Record. It seems likely, however, that these
tracks were not included. Katsuhiko Seki writes:
"The Hüsker Dü tracks did not make it on the
Meathouse comp tape from 1982... it was supposed to
be a double tape release, but later became a single
tape release... I don't know if there was a
"Meathouse #2", as the comp that did come out was
			titled "Meathouse 1," which contained 26 bands/41
			songs...."

Title: Kitten **out of print**
Format: Cassette compilation
Label: Reflex Records
Catalog Number: Reflex C
Date Recorded: 09 Oct 1982
Release Date: 1982
Notes: Another really tough find, although the 1999 CD
reissue is quite a bit easier. The original
cassette version, however, came with a 16-page
booklet (see the link on the title line above).
Contents:

Title: Everything Falls Apart **out of print**
Format: Album (12", 45 RPM)
Label: Reflex Records
Catalog Number: Reflex D
Date Recorded: Jun-Jul 1982
Release Date: Jan 1983
Notes: Earliest pressings, which included a lyric sheet,
are of greatest interest to collectors, but later
pressings without the lyric sheet are also worth
seeking. Rumor has it that the master for this
record has been lost. Two pressings of 5000 each.
Contents:

Artist: Various (Noble Mice)
Title: Burger Corpse **out of print**
Format: Cassette compilation
Label: L.E.E. Tapes
Catalog Number: None
Date Recorded: Jul 1983
Release Date: 1983
Time: 59:36
Notes: Minneapolis compilation featuring Noble Mice, with
Grant Hart on bass. Some of the bands were recorded
live, others in the studio. Recognizable names
among the contributors include Hypstrz and Ground
Zero, along with more obscure bands like Mr. Slate,
Employees Only (both with excellent tracks). The
rest of the lineup includes Last Generation, Skelter
Helter, Church Picnic, Boy Elroy, Steve McQueen and
the Good Brains, S.I.B., 27 Various, One Happy
Family, and Ra Sewage. Most of the music is in the
hardcore style of the day, but there is psychedelia
from 27 Various and a reggae-ish tune by Steve
McQueen. The artwork for the Noble Mice page in the
accompanying booklet appears to have been done by
			Grant. Noble Mice lineup:

Paul Svenska [Osby] -- guitar, vocals
			  Dale Nelson -- vocals
			  Billy O'Devlin -- drums
			  Grant Hart -- bass

The bass player for Mr. Slate was Grant's longtime
			friend Paul Harsha (as "Al").

Title: Code Blue **out of print**
Format: Cassette compilation
Label: Last Rites
Catalog Number: LR 003
Date Recorded: 28 Dec 1982
Release Date: 1984
Notes: Compilation issued by Last Rites fanzine from
McHenry IL. A photocopied sheet of band pictures
came stuffed inside the cassette case and featured
a shot of Bob in action. All songs are from the
Backstage (Tucson AZ) soundboard. When this item
was last seen advertised, asking price was $60--
a risky investment considering how easy it is to
                        counterfeit.

Title: Bang Zoom #6
Format: Cassette magazine
Label: Bang Zoom
Catalog Number: 6
Date Recorded: 04 Oct 1984
Release Date: 1984
Time: 11:48
Notes: Distributed by Midnight Records, NYC and possibly
others. Interview was conducted at Maxwell's in
Hoboken NJ by resident DJ Guy Ewald after a Hüsker
Dü gig there. As it turned out, his buddy Darren
Viola ended up asking most of the questions. Ewald,
writing in 2013, describes the scene:

"I remember it pretty well in spite of being totally
drunk. I don't know how I met the Bang! guy... he
probably hung out at Maxwell's and knew my name from
my short misadventure writing for The Rocker (at
Glenn Morrow's urging). He asked me if I could
interview Hüsker Dü at their upcoming Maxwell's gig
and I agreed. It didn't occur to me to prepare any
questions, I figured I talked with musicians all the
time so it would come naturally. He was supposed to
come over in the early evening with his tape
recorder, but he didn't show up so I figured I was
off the hook and proceeded to have a blast, going
nuts during Hüsker's set, deejaying, swilling beer
and toasting shots of tequila or whatever.

"Right before 3:00AM closing Mr. Bang showed up and
gave me the tape recorder and... me du husker
			interview.

"As often as not [club owner] Steve [Fallon] used to
like to hang out after hours so it wasn't unusual
for some workers and an inner circle to be there
till dawn and beyond. We were sitting at the little
bar in the back room, and like I say, I was really
drunk. I asked a couple of stupid questions and then
my friend Darren came to my rescue and started
asking them about professional wrestling. I don't
know how he knew they were fans, but he was
			knowledgeable too.

"That interview was basically conducted by Darren.
He and his wife were the most dependable regular
customers at Maxwell's back then. All I did was
giggle in the background like a fucking idiot. I was
really embarrassed by it and never really listened
to it after spot-checking the tape on the Sunday
after. I remember Mr. Bang told me the interview was
'weird, but interesting.' I was never asked to do
			another one."

Release Date: 17 Jun 1996
Time: 50:22
Notes: UK compilation of 80s US indie and almost-indie,
			roots-oriented, guitar-centric rock. Includes
tracks by Georgia Satellites, Jason and the
Scorchers, Green on Red, Steve Earle, Smithereens,
Los Lobos, Long Ryders, Hooters, others (Hüskers on
track 3). The theme of the liner notes is that this
sort of rock carried on in the US while music built
around "cheapo synths" displaced it in England. For
some reason, a flood of these turned up on eBay in
			early 2005.

Title: Rage: More Of The Songs Most Chosen
			By Rage Guest Programmers
Format: Compilation 2xCD
Label: Virgin/EMI/ABC Music
Catalog Number: 7243 5237252 2 [Australia release]
Date Recorded: Aug-Nov 1986
Release Date: 1999
Time: 48:30 (disk 1)
			56:59 (disk 2)
Notes: 'rage' was, maybe still is, a television program on
Australia's ABC TV network. The album liner notes
explain that the show first aired in 1987, and in
1990 started inviting guest programmers to choose
and present the 40 (!) videos shown over the course
of the evening. Guests have included most of the
usual indie-rock suspects -- REM, Beck, Elvis
Costello (far too many to list, but no Hüskers).
The resulting "favorites" album is a pretty decent
			compilation of indie greatest hits.

			57:38 (disk 2)
Notes: Hüsker selection is the leadoff track on disk 1:
Someone at K-tel is on the ball.

Quoting from the official K-tel press release:

"Before alternative referred to a genre of music
and Nirvana still signified a state of mind, a
distinct bunch of rowdy young bands criss-crossed
the country in rusty vans. They played in dingy
clubs, slept on the floors of ardent fans, and
rewrote the history of rock and roll. K-tel's
latest breakthrough compilation Gimme Indie Rock
			V. 1 recounts their story.

"Hüsker Dü, the Wipers, Pussy Galore, The Minutemen:
these legendary bands passed stealth-like beneath
the commercial radar of the waning '80s. They,
and others like them, built a new infrastructure of
labels, agents, and promoters which supported an
underground network that would rise to occupy
the mainstream for the better part of the '90s."

Catalog Number: OPCD-7618
Date Recorded: Oct 1985-Jan 1986
Release Date: 25 Nov 2003
Time: 65:21
Notes: Newbury Comics 25th anniversary compilation of hits
from the early days. The Hüsker track, given the
honor of anchoring the compilation, is a bit of a
curious choice, as it is neither an early song nor
one that most would consider particularly
representative of their characteristic sound. The
other tracks are more in line with expectation --
			"Sonic Reducer," "Blank Generation," "Sheena,"
"Love Will Tear Us Apart," etc.

Liner notes have the following to say about the
			band:

"Hüsker Dü represented the best of '80s independent
rock. Along with groups like R.E.M. and the
Replacements Bob Mould, Grant Hart & Greg Norton
designed the blueprint for underground rock success.
Constant touring and college radio success helped
Hüsker Dü expand its fan base from their humble
beginnings in Minnesota to a national level. The
group released their major label debut, Candy Apple
Grey, in 1986 to rave reviews. The unique brand of
punk-pop on songs like "Sorry Somehow" influenced a
generation of bands, from Nirvana to the Pixies and
			everyone in between."

Title: Body Of Song
Format: Album (CD/12")
Label: Yep Roc Records
Catalog Number: CD-YEP-2091
Date Recorded: 1998-2002
Release Date: 26 Jul 2005
Time: 50:51
Notes: Release originally scheduled for Sep 2002, then
moved out to Feb 2003, Apr 2003, sometime in 2004,
then to July 2005, as Bob concentrated on other
projects. Excerpts from a Yep Roc press release
			dated 22 Mar 2005:

Bob Mould returns to the signature guitar sound
and songwriting style that helped define a genre
on Body Of Song, due out July 26 on Yep Roc.

Written and recorded mostly over the course of
the past year, Body Of Song is Mould's first
new album length release since 2002, and his
first since the mid-90s to employ a guitar-heavy
			  full-band approach ("Paralyzed," "Circles") as
well as a few subdued, acoustic-based ballads
("High Fidelity," "Days Of Rain") and some new
twists, such as the electronically treated
vocals riding atop waves of guitar on "(Shine
			  Your) Light Love Hope."

Guest musicians on Body Of Song include Brendan
Canty (Fugazi), David Barbe (Sugar), Matt Hammon
(1998 Bob Mould Band), and Amy Domingues
			  (Garland Of Hours).

Body Of Song's release will be followed by a
fall world tour that will see Mould performing
material from all stages of his career-solo,
Sugar, Husker Du-for the first time in a full
band context. Of the above musicians, Canty has
signed on to play drums for the tour.

Body Of Song was produced and mixed by Bob
Mould with engineers Don Zientara (Inner Ear
Studio, Arlington VA), David Barbe (Chase Park
			  Transduction, Athens GA), Frank Marchand
(Waterford Digital, Pasadena MD), and Mould
			  himself (Granary NYC, Granary WDC).

"Underneath Days" began life as "Fucked Underneath
Days." Since the lyrics haven't changed, though,
it seems unlikely that the amputation will make the
disk any more welcome at WalMart. "Surveyors And
Cranes" and "My Old Friend" both showed up on early
track listings (just after "Missing You") but were
ultimately shifted to the "extras" disk of the
			Deluxe Version.

Time: 45:32
Notes: The following description, which appeared on the
Kudos Records website, looks as if it might be a
			press release from Thirsty Ear:

Musical combustion is about to take place. Take
on part of the legendary punk outfit Husker Du
(Greg Norton), mix in the bad-ass jazz sounds
of Bad Plus (Dave King), stir vigorously with
the keyboard mastery of Craig Taborn and add
the spicy seasoning of happy Apples' Erik
Fratzke, and you have the perfect progressive
punk stew: GANG FONT Feat. INTERLOPER.

Rife with intricate and ingenious instrumental
interplay, GANG FONT feat. INTERLOPER is a
recording that is as bombastic as it is
intricate, weaving thumping bass and murderous
drums with schizophrenic guitars and otherworldly
keyboards, creating a frantic vitality that is
			  rarely heard elsewhere.

This is one for the musicians in the house.
But be careful, because after playing it, they'll
stay in the house to hear it one more time.

Greg Norton was originally the "interloper," but
now seems to be a fully accepted member of the
band, whose somewhat awkward name is variously
rendered as "The Gang Font feat. Interloper,"
"The Gang Font, featuring Interloper," "Gang Font
featuring Interloper," or sometimes simply "Gang
Font." Release date pushed back from 13 Mar 2007
to 03 Apr, then moved up to 27 Mar.

Several song samples are available on the band's
			MySpace page.

Notes: Tribute to the late John Clegg ("J.C."), who died
18 Feb 2008. The three tracks on this CD feature
Clegg as guest performer on sax, and were extracted
from various unreleased live recordings. According
to Grant Hart, Clegg was a somewhat eccentric but
much beloved character in the local music scene, and
was particularly fond of playing with the Hüskers—
to the extent that he would likely have happily
accepted membership in the band had it been offered.
Liner notes by Grant Hart. Limited edition of 500

			Oct 2009 (12")
Time: 34:11 [excluding bonus track*]
Notes: Grant's long-awaited followup to Good News For
Modern Man. From the MVD press release:

Grant Hart's first solo album of the 21st century
is one of the best things he has ever done. The
former Hüsker Dü drummer and co-songwriter worked
with the diverse cast of musicians from Godspeed
You Black Emperor and Silver Mt. Zion on this new
CD, Hot Wax, recorded in Montreal and Minneapolis.
Grant on some of the some of the songs: the song
"Narcissus,Narcissus" is my first attempt at
combining ancient Greek mythology and American
rock-a-billy. By merging those influences with an
ice cream truck atmosphere I think I have found a
style that defines this period of my career.
"You're the Reflection of the Moon on the Water"
is one of the most organic rock and roll songs that
I have ever written. It's style owes a lot to my
devotion for patti smith. It was inspired by a
comment made by a monk during the selection process
to find the next Panchen Lhama, who said of one
candidate, "he is the reflection of the moon on the
water but he is not the moon."

"Wheels" (*) is a rerecorded version of the 1982
Hüsker Dü song from 1982's Everything Falls Apart,
and is available only as an mp3 download (99 cents
			at Amazon).

edition of 1000 pressed for distribution during
Grant's Fall 2010 European tour. No advance copies
or digital downloads, and no US distribution. From
			Grant's preliminary liner notes:

			 DEAR LISTENER,

WHAT YOU ARE HOLDING IS A COLLECTION OF RARITIES
FROM MY CAREER FROM 1988 TO 1995, WITH A COUPLE OF
NEWER SONGS THROWN IN FOR FUN LISTENING. MOSTLY
THEY WERE RECORDED FOR ONE TIME AIRPLAY ON COOL
STATIONS IN EUROPE. SOME WERE RECORDED LIVE AT
CLUBS OR IN THE BROADCAST STUDIO. OTHERS WERE OUT-
TAKES THAT APPEARED ON COMPILATION DISCS OR ON
SINGLES LIMITED TO A FEW HUNDRED COPIES. LISTEN
CLOSELY, YOU MIGHT HEAR YOURSELF IN THE AUDIENCE!

I WROTE THESE SONGS EXCEPT FOR "MASTERS OF WAR" BY
BOB DYLAN AND 'I JUST WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO YOU"
WHICH WILLIE DIXON WROTE. I DON'T COVER A LOT OF
OTHER WRITERS WORK AND IT GIVES ME NO SMALL AMOUNT
OF PRIDE TO INCLUDE THESE GREAT SONGS WITH MINE.

IF I HAVE A SINGLE REGRET ABOUT THIS RECORD IT IS
THE FACT THAT MUCH OF THE INFORMATION HAS BEEN
LOST, NAMES OF PEOPLE NOT WRITTEN DOWN, CALL
LETTERS OF RADIO STATIONS FORGOTTEN. THE WEB SITES
THAT ARE SO HELPFUL NOWADAYS ARE PROBABLY THE BEST
SOURCE FOR INFORMATION DETAILS ON THE HISTORY OF
THESE RECORDINGS. IT IS NOT THAT I DON'T CARE, IT
IS ONLY MY PREOCCUPATION WITH MAKING THE NEXT
RECORDS AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE THAT PREVENTS MY
			 INCLUDING MORE DETAILS.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE PEOPLE AT HAZELWOOD FOR
THEIR PATIENCE AND ALL-AROUND POSITIVE INFLUENCE
ON THIS RELEASE. I ALSO WISH TO THANK THOSE PEOPLE
PAST AND PRESENT WHO HAVE AIDED AND ABETTED MY LIFE
IN MUSIC,ESPECIALLY CESAR THE MONKEY WHOSE HEROIC
EFFORTS PREVENTED A GREAT TRAGEDY ALL THOSE YEARS
			 BACK.

MAY YOU CONTINUE TO BE TOUCHED BY LOVE AND MAGICK
			 AND PEACE.
			                                          GRANT HART

Grant wishes to correct an error in the liner notes,
in which "Cesar the monkey" is among those thanked.
Grant has learned that the monkey's actual name is
			Amadeos.
