Since our congregation first gathered in 1669, Old South Church has recognized that our Christian faith requires engagement in the world. From hosting the rally that led to the Boston Tea Party to founding the City Mission Society in 1806, from building affordable housing in Boston to supporting the 2002 Justice for Janitors campaign, the Old South congregation has been serving those in need and speaking out for justice in our community for over 300 years.

The Old South Church remains active and dedicated to Christian service and outreach. Our continued commitment to living out the Christian faith by serving others and building a world of justice and peace takes shape in the following ways.

We GIVE of our financial resources to those in need.

  •  Developing an alternative giving program to encourage charitable giving in honor of a loved one instead of purchasing traditional gifts
  •  Giving grants to over 30 local non-profit organizations totaling almost $100,000 annually
  •  Organizing seasonal collections for clothing, food, toys, coins and blankets
  •  Sponsoring two special denominational offerings each year

We SERVE those in need by giving our time and energy to volunteer efforts.

  •  Building houses with Habitat for Humanity
  •  Preparing a monthly meal at Sunday’s Bread
  •  Partnering with men in transition out of incarceration
  •  Serving as volunteer staff for Christmas in the City
  •  Encouraging individual service through Match-Up Interfaith Volunteers service to seniors, Horizons Initiative work with children, Boston Living Center outreach to those with HIV, and other local efforts.

“Be doers of the word, and not merely hearers only…” --James 1:22

We HOST special events and office space for local organizations

  •  Pine Street Inn Project Neighbor

We JOIN TOGETHER with ecumenical and interfaith partners to work for a better community.

  •  Participating in Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries Urban/Suburban Dinner/Dialogues
  •  Organizing for social action through membership and active participation in the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization
  •  Supporting legislative initiatives of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless
  •  Backing the One Family Campaign to End Family Homelessness in Massachusetts

We LEARN together about issues affecting our community and the spiritual/biblical call to do justice and love mercy.

  •  Maintaining a church bulletin board with educational information and opportunities for legislative action
  •  Sponsoring Moments for Mission during worship services to address specific concerns
  •  Developing educational forums on social justice concerns both local and global, including recent forums on South Africa, family homelessness, the death penalty and just war/just peace.
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me…”
  Matthew 25:35-36
