Helen, I have been researching this very subject, and I have some URLs for
you (and anyone else who is interested). I am identifying and analysing
the business processes for maintaining a corporate website, which has led
me to some exciting research on the growth and potential of corporate
Intranets (and now there's something called an "Extranet."--see
www.intranetjournal.com/expert.html)

www.intranetpartners.com/IntranetOrg/
www.amdahl.com/doc/products/bsg/intra/adapt.html
(These are must-reads for LO advocates)

http://www.netscape.com/comprod/announce/roi.html
(IDC study on ROI of Intranets)

www.cio.com/CIO/041596_ins.htmls
http://www.cio.com/WebMaster/wm_irc.html
www.netscape.com/comprod/at_work/customer_profiles/index.html

also the following sites contain forums much like LO where folks are
hashing out the details:

www.intranetjournal.com/
www.cio.com/

A fertile area for research will be: which work interactions can be
successfully engaged in electronically and which need face-to-face
contact, and why. And does this change with familiarity/culture/etc. or is
there a constant of human interaction?
