A front-end loader? On the beach?

April 3, 1997

The snow is melting rapidly. It sounds like we're living inside a babbling brook. Water water everywhere.

Had my first plover warden shift of the season today at Plum Island. A guy was joy riding in a front end loader on the beach! I flagged him down and asked where he was going. He said "nowhere, I'm just out for a ride on the beach." I politely told him the refuge beach was closed due to plover nesting and he turned around and drove north on the public beach. I didn't realize I was scared until after he left! What a bizarre experience!

Other than the front end loader, it was a quiet shift. I only spoke to 4 people.

Plover count: 5
