Want to Start a Band?

Want to start a band? Let me know. I play bass guitar, not well, but I do show up for rehearsal and gigs on schedule. I come equipped with a Dr. Rhythm drum machine, and I will play just about anything, except heavily commericalized pop or country. I like the blues and I'll write a blues tune from time to time.

Right now I have Toni Childs' Union playing. She's so cool.

Lately I have been listening to female singer/songwriters, and to male guitar players:

• Laura Nyro
  Her limits were fury and glory and God and the Devil.
  We will miss you, Laura. Thank you for sharing your soul.

• Paula Cole, This Fire and Harbinger
  Hush, Hush, Hush... Paula is one of the few artists who've connected with my sense of the tremendous humanity of dying. She seems to be pretty well acquainted with other aspects of bein' a hummin' bean, too.

• Shawn Colvin, Fat City and a few small repairs
  I keep listening to (and dancing to) Climb On (A Back That's Strong) despite the fact that I don't believe a word of it.

• Sarah McLachlan
  If she wrote it, and I can find it, I'll buy it and have a listen.

• Rickie Lee Jones, GHoSTYhead
  Rickie Lee is starting to sound a little like Laurie Anderson. Nice sonic treats in this one.

• Laurie Anderson, Bright Red/Tightrope
  The first time I listened to this, I didn't have the volume up high enough and I thought it was wierd. I was wrong. Laurie's tellin' stories again.

• Alberta Hunter, Amtrack Blues
  Wow. Double wow.

• Leo Kottke, standing in my shoes
  His Corrina, Corrina just makes me smile. And dance.

• Ry Cooder, Borderline
  Now here we have a fella who can flat play the guitar.

• Duke Levine, Country Soul Guitar
  Keep yer ears peeled for Duke. I think we'll be hearing more from him, and I am looking forward to it.

• Matt "Guitar" Murphy, the Blues don't bother me!
  How come "Guitar" Murphy is so much younger than Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson? Matt's blues don't bother me a bit, except... I want to move to Memphis.

• Little Feat
  Every album the band put out while Lowell George was alive, especially Time Loves A Hero. Oh, and Feats Don't Fail Me Now. And Dixie Chicken...

• Benny Goodman
  Benny is the man.
