Introductory-level college and university science instructors are often faced with a dilemma: the subject
matter which most interests their students requires nearly a semester's worth of cumulative learning.
The "cool stuff" in these courses thus ends up being crammed into a lecture or two, just when students
are overwhelmed by final exams. In the atmospheric sciences, many students are attracted to
introductory courses by the promise of learning about weather forecasting -- which, due to the
complexity of the weather and the layout of standard texts, is usually taught at semester's end.
