The late Celeste T. Wright was famous as a pioneer on the UC Davis Campus. Throughout a 51 year academic career spent teaching English, Latin, German, and Dramatic Arts, she staked her claim to numerous firsts, including first woman faculty member with a Ph.D., first tenured woman faculty member, first campus drama instructor, first humanities professor to receive a campus Faculty Research Lecturer award, and one of the first campus women to have a building named after her. In 1997, she was overjoyed at this sudden surprise of the building dedication.

"Celeste Turner Wright Hall" now stands as a memorial to her indelible legacy. She passed away peacefully in her Davis home on September 16, 1999. Both Dad and I were present at the time.

The Davis Enterprise published a front page memorial article on Sunday September 19th.
