Known to many in Davis as 'Doc' Wright, Dad died suddenly from a stroke at the age of 91 on a treadmill at a local health club. In the middle of a usual daily workout, I feel it is a way he would have wanted to go. His obituary appeared in the Local section of the Davis Enterprise on Sunday November 11, 2001. Dad according to any accounts was an extraordinary man. A caring and intelligent Mr. Mom, he stayed at home with me while Mom worked at UC Davis. He had a lifetime of adventures. In 1998, he ceased riding his Peugeot racing bike after a serious traffic accident with a car, but insisted on keeping fit with a 90-minute daily workout till the very end. In 1995 at the age of 85, in tandem with John Castanon he rode his last Double Century, the 200-mile ride that takes place in Davis every May. Until his retirement from the DC, he was the oldest participant for the past seven years. During his daily rides of the recent past, he logged about 6,000 miles a year on his bike, down from 10,000 a year in earlier years... Copyright ©2000 by Vedder Wright (vedder@TheWorld.com). |
