Flying Horses at Savin Rock

Savin Rock in West Haven CT, was one the great seaside amusement parks. This magnificent merry-go-round, which we always knew as the "Flying Horses," is said to have been rescued when the park was bulldozed in the early 60s to make way for condos. Someone told me once that it now lives somewhere in California.

As far as I can determine, this photo was taken in the summer of 1948. I dimly remember this outing, and the thought that I was three years old at the time has become lodged in my memory. Seems about right.

Side note: if anyone has photos of any of the three(?) big coasters at Savin Rock, or of the Virginia Reel that was a fixture there for so many years, please get in touch.
