The Deacon's Companion

Instructions: Combined Services

When there is one service rather than two (during the summer and some school breaks), deacons do the work that usually takes place at both the 9:00 and 11:00 services.

If you usually serve at 9:00, add the following to what you would typically do:

  • Both hosts need to bring refreshments: a bottle of juice or soda or soda water and a couple of boxes of cookies (or equivalent).
  • After the service, serve the remaining bread at the coffee hour. If any is left over, bring it home to consume or feed it to the birds (outside).
  • Be prepared to stay until the end of the coffee hour and to clean up afterwards.
  • Put the communion vessels away instead of leaving them on the counter for the next service.
  • Return any opened bottles of grape juice to the refrigerator in the sacristy.
  • After the service, turn off the lights in the sanctuary.
  • After the service, turn off the sound system by following the instructions in the black cabinet above the sink in the sacristy.

If you usually serve at 11:00, add the following to your usual responsibilities:

  • If the Parish Administrator is not doing so, make the coffee.
  • Check the hymn numbers on the hymn boards against the numbers given in the bulletin, and correct the numbers on the boards if necessary. (Note: the hymn boards were taken down in August 2002. This task will only be relevant if they are put back up.)

See the instructions for serving at the 9:00 Service and the 11:00 Service for details.
