Shabbat Services

We anticipate that many out-of-town family members and friends will arrive by Friday evening. The following synagogue observances and community celebrations will be held on the Shabbat before the wedding; we would love to have you join us for these as well.

Friday Evening: Shabbat Services

The Jewish Sabbath begins at 7:05pm (18 minutes before sundown). Synagogue services at TBS begin at 6:30pm, running until approximately 8:00pm. Erica regularly leads this service, and we encourage all who are interested to attend.

Saturday Morning: The Aufruf

It is a Jewish tradition that, on the Saturday morning before the wedding, the groom (and/or, nowadays, the bride) be specially called up to the Torah during the synagogue service. This practice is known as an aufruf (Yiddish for "calling up", pronounced to rhyme with "woof-woof"), and is a festive occasion marked by singing and throwing candy.

The synagogue service (also at TBS) begins at 9:30am. Both Erica and Justin will be called up to read from the week's Torah portion, Parshat Re'eh (Deuteronomy 11:26-16:17). The service runs until about 12:15pm, followed by a luncheon downstairs at the synagogue (which is usually over by 1:30 or 2pm). We encourage all guests to join us for this element of the wedding celebration, to experience the tremendous warmth and enthusiasm of our synagogue community (as well as the bagels and lox!).
