Steven R. Lerman received his Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D.degrees from MIT in 1972, 1973 and 1975 respectively. His undergraduate degree is in Civil Engineering, and both his graduate degrees are in the area of transportation systems. He was appointed to the MIT faculty in 1975, and he is now a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and holder of the Class of 1922 Distinguished Professor. He is currently the Director of the Center for Educational Computing Initiatives (CECI), Associate Chairman of the MIT Faculty, a member of the Management Board of the MIT Press, and also a member ofthe Board of Directors of Cambridge Systematics, Inc. From 1983 to 1988, Professor Lerman directed Project Athena. This project developed a campus-wide distributed system of advanced computer workstations at MIT. Since joining the MIT faculty, Prof. Lerman has served as the Head of the Transportation Systems Division, the Head of the Intelligent Engineering Systems LaboratoryHe is the author of two books and numerous journal articles. His computer methods textbook Introduction to Computation and Problem Solving for Scientists and Engineers was published by Prentice Hall.
