SolidWorks Corporation

300 Baker Avenue, Concord MA 01742

I have been a Technical Writer at SolidWorks since April 1999. When I started, I was the fifth writer. Now we have seven writers, and only the manager has been there longer than I. We have a good team of writers, and we work well together. For one of my classes in Technical Writing, I wrote about how the writers at SolidWorks collaborate. The article was published online in Boston Broadside, the periodical of the Boston chapter of the Society for Technical Communication. Technical Writing at SolidWorks Corporation is a Collaborative Effort

The company is located only 1/2 mile from my home at Concord Greene, so I walk to work and home for lunch.

SolidWorks is Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software for designing models in 3D (solid). You create parts and assemblies, then turn them into 2D drawings and output files as needed for manufacturing. Magic!

The technical writers are responsible for online help (our reference manual), Getting Started and What's New printed books, various smaller documents such as Release Notes, and now online help for various Internet initiatives. We have seven technical writers, and the documents are translated into ten languages -- French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, and Korean.

The company blurb: "SolidWorks Corporation, a Dassault Systemes S.A. (Nasdaq: DASTY, Bourse de Paris) company, develops and markets mechanical design software solutions. Founded in 1993, SolidWorks' mission is to deliver the power of 3D to everybody in design and manufacturing. As of January 2002, SolidWorks has sold more than 160,000 total seats of software worldwide. SolidWorks has offices worldwide and distributes its products through a network of 230 resellers selling in 70 countries."
