International Horn Society |
The International Horn Society (IHS) is an association of about 3,500 hornists -- professionals, amateurs, enthusiasts, students, educators, instrument makers, etc. About 700 of the members are from outside the US.
The IHS produces an annual international symposium, which usually is in the US two years and then in a non-US country. Generally, the workshop includes recitals with first-rate artists, masterclasses and lectures, solo competitions, mock auditions, mass horn choir, guided warm-ups, exhibits, and meetings of the IHS Advisory Council, US Area Representatives, and the IHS annual general meeting.
I am the IHS Area Representative for Massachusetts and any New England without a representative. I publish the Corncuopia newsletter in part as a way of disseminating information on IHS as well as local and regional activities. I am in my second term on the IHS Advisory Council (AC). My term ends after the 2002 symposium. The AC meets at the annual symposium and conducts business between the meetings by phone, fax, and email. IHS members elect nine members of the AC, three each year. Terms are for three years. The AC itself elects additional members and elects Honorary Members.

Membership in the IHS is $35/year, $90/3 years, or $500 lifetime. The Horn Call alone is worth the membership fee. I am a lifetime member, and I highly recommend Lifetime Membership if you are at all serious about being a hornist. You never have to worry about renewing.
