Concord Greene Bird List

Compiled from residents, 1981-2001

Concord Greene is at the corner of Routes 2 and 62 in Concord MA. The other two sides of the property are a railroad track and another street -- Baker Avenue. The area of the property is about 25 acres. There are 220 units (1- and 2-bedroom apartments and 3-storey townhouses) in 31 buildings.

In addition to the buildings, Concord Greene has three small ponds made from damming a stream that meanders from the Asabet River, under Route 2, through a marsh and Concord Greene, under Baker Avenue, and back into the river. There is also a small apple orchard, a rock grotto, and a plot of community gardens with a mixture of vegatables and flowers.

In some ways Concord Greene is an unlikely setting for birding. In fact, one time I was in a frame-it-yourself shop, framing enlarged photos of birds. Other customers there said, "You must live out in the country." They could hardly believe it when I told them where I had taken the pictures. I have seen sharp-shinned hawks, a rose-breasted grosbeak, and a juvenile indigo bunting -- in addition to many more familiar birds -- in the tree just outside my window.

The list below is a compilation of birds either seen by me or reported by other residents since 1981. Some are seen often; others have been spotted only once overhead. For example, one day I was outside with my camera when I heard a strange sound overhead. I was able to take three photos of a flock of if large birds before they disappeared. Later I looked in a bird book to determine that they were ibis.
