Jan 12, 1999 - Public seminars are available in Feb in the San Diego area by David Solomon. See David Solomon's site for details.

Jan 6, 1999 - New page on Dr. Iver. This on Using Driver Verify to Expose Driver Errors. It explains how to use this tool under build 1946 of Windows 2000.

- Updated the events on my tools page.

Dec 23,1998 - Added a Windows CE section in tools. All from cduffel!

Dec 20,1998 - Added a serial software kit to the tools page. Thanks to cduffek@stny.lrun.com for the link. Many more links coming!

Nov 16,1998 - Modified the books page to take out Inside Windows NT by Helen Custer (not available under Amazon.com any more.)

Oct 22, 1998 - Compuware, the owner of NuMega (SoftIce) has acquired Vireo(VToolsD). Click here for details.

Oct 13, 1998 - Two new articles on the Microsoft site. One Checklist for NT 5.0 driver development and two, DriverVer directive for INF.

- Modified the link to the FreeWire Cafe transcript on my direct input page. (Page moved)

Sept 28, 1998 - Bluewater Systems has a downloadable version of WinDK for Windows CE Beta.

- A new version of Driver::Wizard (by Vireo) is available for free download. This version works with MSVC 6.0.

Sept 9, 1998 - Added the two DDKs to my links page.

Sept 8, 1998 - Vireo has an update for Driver::Works 2.0. Here is the link to download the update. Contact Vireo support for the unzip password (serial number required).

Vireo also has a sample driver for the Cypress USB Thermometer Kit.

Sept 4, 1998 - In case people are interested, there is a new site, the Advanced TV Enhancement Forum. This group has defined protocols for HTML based enhanced televisions which should allow enhanced programming.

Sept 3, 1998 - Moved old news to the archive, and updated my application programming hints page.

- There is a new version (1.15) of Driver::Agent by Vireo. This program allows hardware access by applications.

- Immersion has updated their site and some pages are at different locations. Changed my pages to the correct links, as well as fixing MSDN links on the same page.

- Techsoft has updated their VxDWriter software to 1.50. (The site has also moved)

August 98

Aug 31, 1998 - Microsoft has added many articles to their hardware site, so many that I'm not going to list them all. The one new addition that I thought was exciting was the Windows NT 5.0 Beta 2 DDK. If this is available now, the OS really should be available mid-late September like they said.

Aug 28, 1998 - SysInternals has come up with a version of their DebugView that works with Windows 98/95.

Aug 27, 1998 - In case you haven't noticed, NuMega's site has been up for a while.

- Annabooks Software LLC and Intrinsyc Software inc. have signed an agreement to form Intrinsyc. INC.

- Another tip was put on Vireo's site. This one is Calling WDM Services from Windows 98 VxDs.

- The information about Annabook's USB class is no longer up. No word if it is discontinued or not.

Aug 20, 1998 - Numega's website still seems to be down. No word when it will be up again.

- For those interested in display drivers, Microsoft has put up Implementing GammaRamp Support in a Windows 95/98 Display Driver on their site.

- NT 5.0 Beta 2.0 is supposedly done. MSDN Universal and Professional subscribers should recieve it on CD mid to late September.

- According to Microsoft's DirectX page, Eric Unger has adapted some of DirectX 6.0 to the Delphi environment. He is working on DirectShow, DirectAnimation and DirectMusic adaptations.

- Added a link on my books page to an interview by David Solomon.

Aug 18, 1998 - Bluewater Systems now has WinDK version 2.6 available. This kit contains new componants for support of Plug and Play and Power management for Windows NT 5.0 and Windows 98. Also improved WDM samples.

Aug 17, 1998 - Vireo has changed the look of their site. Much better in my opinion.

Crafting Windows NT Device Drivers now has a book cover image. I have updated my book page to include it.

Aug 13, 1998 - Some of the MSDN site links have changed, so I have changed my links appropriately.

Aug 12, 1998 - There is a new tip at Vireo. This tip is Using NtKernLoadDriver in Windows 98 VxDs.

Aug 11, 1998 - SysInternals has released version 3.5 of their monitoring tools. (Filemon/95+NT, Regmon/95+NT). New enhancements include path include and exclude filters.

- If you are a MSDN Universal subscriber, you can download the new Visual Studio 6.0. Visual Studio 6.0 won't be in stores until September.

- Put a small notation about how to get a device specific registry entry in my WDM hints page.

Aug 7, 1998 - Microsoft is hosting a Windows Networking and Communications Conference at Microsoft in Redmond on Sept 15-17, 1998.

Aug 5, 1998 - Microsoft has DirectX 6 available for download now. Be careful if you are downloading the core files. There is a separate download for Windows 98. Microsoft will only have DirectX 6.0 on their site until August 31, 1998. Then it has to be ordered. And make sure you have plenty of time. The SDK is 91 meg!

- This isn't so much driver related as software development related. MSDN has posted an article from Software Development magazine. It's The Seven Deadly Sins of Software Reviews. It mentions common problems that hinder code reviews, and ways around them.

- Added "How to load a static vxd" to my VxD Hint page.

Aug 3, 1998 - Sysinternals has updated their DebugView program. This program captures OutputDebugString and DbgPrint without needing a debugger. The new version adds high resolution time stamping and more...

- Compuware has announced DevStudio 6, integrated debugging for Microsoft Visual Studio 6. Included in this package is SoftIce 3.23. It will be available in September.

- Microsoft has announced that DirectX 6.0 has been released to manufacturing. It is not yet available for download, but it is available for ordering.

July 98

July 29, 1998 - Vireo has created a program that turns a SOURCES file into a Microsoft Visual C++ 5.0 project. This allows using DevStudio to build a NT kernel mode driver instead of the command line build. Some limitations: Only NT 4.0 and Windows 98 DDKs are supported. July 28, 1998 - The Hardware Design Guide for Microsoft Windows NT Server has been updated, and placed on Microsoft's website.

July 27, 1998 - Thanks to Jim Lyssy for his additions and improvements of the DLL Hint page.

July 23, 1998 - The Meltdown Summer 98 slides are up on the Microsoft site. If you are looking for info on the semantic mapper, it's in this location.

July 22, 1998 - The PC99 System Design Guide, version 1.0 is up. Go see what the new hardware logo requirements are.

- The transcript of the chat with the authors of Inside DirectX at the FreeWire Cafe is up.

July 21, 1998 - There aren't presentation slides for Meltdown yet, but Microsoft has put up something else on the Meltdown site. It is a library for simplified DirectX programming. I haven't tried it yet, so I have no comment. If you have tried it, please email me and tell me your comments.

July 14, 1998 - The Semantic mapper was talked about in the Meltdown Conference today. The slides should be up in a week. I am planning a brief article on this in a week.

July 10, 1998 - There will be a chat with the authors of Inside DirectX on July 16, 6-7 PT at the FreeWire Cafe.

July 9, 1998 - The PC 99 System Design Guide version 0.9 is now available. Go check out what the computers of the year 1999 will be like.

July 8, 1998 - Microsoft has done a complete rehab on it's Driver and Hardware Development site. There are still a few broken links, (like a link to a fee based DDK support site), but it seems pretty solid. The best part of the rehab is this: They put up the Windows 98 DDK for download. That's right, no longer do you have to shell out hundreds(or thousands) of dollars for MSDN, just go over to the 98 DDK site and download to your hearts content.

July 7, 1998 - Vireo has put another tip up, after a few weeks of no updates. This tip is "Obtaining Plug and Play Hardware IDs".

June 30, 1998 - Sysinternals has created a utility that saves the blue screen information in NT 4.0 to a test file. It is called BlueSave.

June 29, 1998 - Microsoft has added more information about what a NT RS232 driver entails on the Microsoft Website. It is described as Draft 0.9.

June 26, 1998 - The Meltdown reduced early registration conference rate of $400 has been extended until July 1st.
