Dear Org Learner:

I only came to this list 4 or so months ago. So I may have missed
posts that considered politics in organization. Presently I work
at the University of Idaho and I am always surprised how so many
intelligent people can't cooperate with each other. And its not just
UI, eight mile into Washington at WSU, things are just as petty if
not more so. I have heard there is a novel called Moo that is about
life on a College campus but I haven't picked it up yet.

But the petty turf wars seem silly until people's lives suffer. I
know of a "low level" administrator who spoke his mind freely and
soon that person never got another pay raise. This person has since
retired, but the fact remains that this person was stolen from by
another person. It is not surprising that the person who was passed
over soon started doing as little as possible. Soon, the entire
system is affected because two "well educated" adults couldn't
communicate with each other.

If you have some thoughts and/or stories, please share them.
Polities seem so ubiquitous. Where does one start attempting to
build a learning organization? Below are some lines from a recent
Bob Dylan CD "Oh Mercy." The song is the same as the subject of
this message.

We live in a political world
love doesn't have any place
we live in a time
where men commit crimes
but crime don't have a face

We live in political world
the one we can see and feel
but there's no one to check
it's all a stacked deck
we all know for sure that it's real

We live in a political world
turning' and fashion about
as soon as you're awake
there's a trade to make
that looks like the easy way out.

We live a in political world
everything is her's or his
you're climbing in the flames
you want to shout God's name
but you're not even sure what it is.

By Bob Dylan
