Replying to LO12524 --

Jerry Marlar asks if tolerance should be one way or two way. He is
responding to Gary Scherling's post regarding a white supremacy movement.

For me, tolerance of viewpoint is necessary. I am undecided if tolerance
of a viewpoint that is intolerant is acceptable, but I would probably err
toward accepting it. Tolerance of any level of violence is unacceptable.
Exhorting others to violence or using violent and abusive language is the
same as volence. The law does not draw distinctions in families for
example between verbal abuse and physical abuse. Neither do I.

The issue around white supremacy groups is that they have a reputation for
espousing violence and for using threatening behavior. There are also
clear examples of violent behavior. Therefore, until I learn otherwise, I
cannot tolerate their views.
