Replying to LO12396 --

Please pass this along to Phil, who asked for sources of info on
broadbanding. I was not sure of the address. Braodbanding is certainly a
popular new design for compensation programs which should (ok, in theory)
reduce barriers to restructuring organizations. In practice, they often
lead to an increase in salaries, because all of us are so used to
expecting to be at the top of whatever job category we are in. As you may
have guessed, compensation is an essential foundation of an organization's
structure, but it doesn't drive organizational change.

The American Compensation Association has done research on broadbanding
and also published articles about it in their professional journal. Phil
can get ahold of them at 14040 North Northsight Blvd., Scottsdale,
Arizona, 85260. phone 602-951-9191 fax 602-483-8352
