Bill Hobler, in discussing this issue brought up trouble-spots all over
the world, including bosmia, Ireland, the Middle East, India-Pakistan, and
so forth.
It reminded me of an interesting comment made by George Mitchell, former
majority leader of the US Senate, and from my home state.
While in the Senate, he commented that he was worried that so few people
had a sense of history. Since he left the Senate, he has been struggling
to bring some sanity to Northern Ireland. Recently, when commenting on
that situation, he said that the problem was that people had too much of a
sense of history.
So, which is right? Well, that's a trick question, but he certainly
highlights the major downside of all these cultures we have in the world.
