I refuse to work for prospective clients who ask that I sign an agreement
where they own the work I do with them and I am forbidden the same right.
I do not grant that 3M (or others that I've actually turned down) bring
more to the table than I do. I also do not grant them the unequal claims
they make due to their size rather than any proven capacity.
I expect that we will both learn and that we have the rights to use what
we learn. To suggest it must be repressed is disfunctional to the
individual and society.
I also respect fully whatever a client has developed that is proprietary.
That is BEFORE I walked in the door and can not possibly include what we
haven't yet created. I believe I have the right to demand the same of the
client. (But I don't do it because I'm closer to Ben's thinking.)
I also grant everybody the right to make whatever choices they like in the
area. Those companies who take advantage of the force of their economic
clout will either work in the larger economic ecology or they will
eventually miss out and cut themselves out. All I'm interested in doing,
in regards to this, is observing the various apparent consequences.
