Jack's reflections on language and ritual and in particular
'words' and their limitations of made me think about three things
* Sign language (for the deaf)
* Dance
* Music
I have recently been to classes where we are exploring liturgical dance.
Some of the dances bring all three of the above together in what seems to
me to be a powerful blend. Something is communicated in those dances
which somehow seems more than words..
My knowledge of sign language is limited but I understand they do not use
words as we understand them and they communicate in broader concepts -
anyone know more about this??
Seems to me that dancing could be seen to have been used in many ways over
the years for communication and learning. Peoples have told stories in
dance and used combinations of music and dance to enter into new 'states'
of thought etc..
Music also is a language without words which can express many emotions and
help us in communication etc..
So, Jack, whilst I might have advocated language prior to this morning I
think I just caught a glimpe of what you are talking about .... am I on
the right track??
