Dear all,

I am currently an undergraduate at the University of York in England,
reading IT/Business Management and German. For my final year project, I am
studying motivation within learning organisations. This study is to look
at a number of questions and issues.

Above all, I wish to present a European perspective on the project, since
there seems to be little in the way of research available in this area. I
am particularly interested in anyone's experiences of organisational
learning in Germany, and would especially appreciate any contacts in
Germany.

If anyone can help on any of the following topics, please mail me at:

ajc101@tower.york.ac.uk

1. OVERCOMING RESISTANCE TO ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE

How have organisations wishing to become learning organisations
motivated their employees to take full advantage of the ideas?
Have organisations encountered resistance to organisational learning?
If so, how was this managed and overcome?
How do employees perceive the learning organisation concepts?
What have been the experiences for companies in different industries?
Has Information Technology played a role in motivating employees to learn?

2. MODELS OF MOTIVATION WITHIN THE LEARNING ORGANISATION

Does the learning organisation experience teach us anything new about
motivating employees?
How does the experience compare with traditional models of motivation
(e.g., those of Herzberg, Mayo, Porter & Lawler, etc)?
Can a new model of employee motivation be developed for learning
organisations?
How have senior management and human resources roles changed?

3. MOTIVATION TO LEARN

I also aim to undertake a study of the following, in order to compare
motivation to learn:

i. Profit-making, private-sector learning organisations
ii. Non-profit-making, public-sector learning organisations
iii. Educational establishments

METHODS OF STUDY

Above all, my aim is to place a European slant on the project. I have come
across a great deal of information on learning organisations in the
English-speaking world, particularly the United States, Canada and the UK.
However, I can find little information on learning organisations within
the rest of the EU.

I am particularly interested in any experience of organisational learning
in Germany. I would be most grateful for any assistance in this area.

Aside from a range of books and current periodicals in the areas of
organisational learning, motivation, human resources, education and
learning, I will be conducting a survey among a number of organisations.
This will take the form of a structured interview or a postal survey. I
will make the results of this survey available to anyone who wishes to
view them.

I look forward to participating in many discussions!

Many thanks

Andrew Cripps
