Replying to LO10945 --

I agree with Gary Scherling's discussion of the ineffectiveness of prisons
as a crime deterrant. We cannot expect jails to the preventive job that
we expect them to do. Prisons is the treatment of the outcome of crime,
but not of its roots. Crime is a complex problem, and cannot be solved by
simple solutions. If the prisons that exist in many countries, where
prisoners are treated not as humans but as something a lot less than that,
have not been effective in reducing crime, what can we expect of our
prisons where the inmates get treated like humans with full rights?

Education, quality education that is, and quality parenting are probably
the best ways to prevent crimes. True crime prevention is what we need to
reduce the crime rate we face all around the world. And I agree that
crime should not pay, but I agree even more with the notion that crime
should not happen!

It could be that if we accepted the notion that crime should not happen,
we might be able to come with creative and effective ways to prevent it!

Thanks, Ivan
