Replying to LO10652 --

A response to the transition to self-managed work teams reminds me of the
great "home test" of a client of mine who was HR director of a large
company. Here's the line that triggered my remarks:

> * Roles and responsibilities need clarity, especially if you are going to
> do each others performance reviews.

The home test is: "Will this work at home?" (In this case, "Is this how
it works at home?")

My wife and I have very few clear roles and responsibilities. Most keep
overlapping, collapsing and changing. It seems to work pretty well. It
is sufficient to for performance reviews - which, of course, are not
formal nor based on clear role descriptions nor do they take place at
specific formal times. When they occur is when it isn't working and they
occur when interpretations and circumstances seem to call for them -
usually great or poor times.

We've all participated as part of some similar self managed teams - they
were called families - and know how to make them work. Let's learn from
them.
