Replying to LO10201 --

Am waiting expectantly to hear the gems that those fortunate ones who
attended the SF Conf will bring back to us. Meanwhile, in Dublin on
Thursday it was my great pleasure to hear Charles Handy, Social
Philosopher, back on his native soil, speak [to an audience of HR
Executives & Relationship Counsellors - a modern marriage ?!].

He spoke of his donuts, flexiwork and how families & relationships "act as
the shock absorbers in the new, tense world". He and his wife have
negotiated a new contract. She is a photographer. Each has six months of
the year when his or her work takes priority.

Handy spoke of "Life's Mystery"
1. The White Stone
2. The Sixth Need
3. The philosophy of "enough"

1. The one who prevails will receive a white stone on which is written a
name known only to the one who prevails...interpreted as 'we'll know
ourselves' [Personal Mastery ? jok]

2. Maslow's Sixth Need - "Idealism" - a need to be part of something
bigger than ourselves. [Make a better world (MABW) or Shaw's "being a
force of nature" ? jok]

3. You cannot know abundance (in e.g.life, achievement,$) unless you have
defined 'enough' [He envies people who have defined enough at such a low
level that they then have loads of choices about what else they want to do
(wow ! jok)].

That is my sixpence worth and now I look forward to the news from STIA/SF
and the proud button wearers. Best Regards,
