Replying to LO9953 --

All the talk of juggling and learning reminded me of a course I was
on once which used the juggling of three balls as a metaphor for
learning:

one = knowledge - there are simple explanations of how to juggle
which can be understood at the level of knowledge and even passed
on to other people without being able to juggle yourself!!

two = skills - to be able to juggle you have to devlop particular
skills in hand movement and coordination which takes practice etc..

three = desire - you have to want to be able to juggle to continue
practising for long enough to master the skill

Often our ability to learn something falls at three rather than one
or two.... when I first saw the juggling demonstrated I *wanted*
to be able to do that and when the theories were explained it all
made sense - I got the basics fairly fast so all it then took was
practise ... yet in the middle of this after dropping many balls
and looking foolish I remember throwing the balls down and saying
'who wants to be able to juggle anyway'....

Later I had been working at something quite improtant in my life
and yet when I 'dropped the balls' and I started to say 'who wants
to..... ' I remebered those juggling balls and asked myself why I
had started .. this reflection led me to carry on and progress
where I might have given up ....

... and I still can't really juggle.....
