Bill Hendry states:

conclusion that money is a motivator IF you don't have what you consider
to be a fair amount for the level of effort you are giving. Once you have
that level, there is diminished returns on more $."
Actually the research around money and effort shows a somewhat different
relationship. When a person feels that their level of effort is greater
than their pay, they are "motivated" to reduce their effort, sometimes
following an unsuccessful attempt to lobby for more money. Money serves
to motivate people to work harder or to assume additional responsibilities
when their lifestyle or desire for the things money can buy exceeds their
income.
