I couldn't help thinking that you could amend your list to:
4. Play (another thing school tried to teach you not to do).
All of these seem to me to be ways to evolve from one known state to a
different state. Perhaps not a state you would have predicted, but linked
in a logical way to the intial state.
But there seem to be revolutionary creative steps as well as evolutionary
ones. We may not be able to stepwise-refine our way out of a pattern of
behavior, there may need to be some leap of the imagination that there CAN
be a different way.
