Barry Mallis' post on individual vs group behaviors has really stimulated my
thinking this morning. Thank you, Barry.

Barry said:

<Are we still unable to mix individual and group in the end? If we attached
electrodes to everyone in a group and studied the meters, the lengths of
print-out, blips on the screen, would we decipher groups still acting
differently from their individual components, and that some of our assumptions
about the relationship of "system" to "people" are misplaced, ill-conceived or
simply lacking altogether?

I think that I have probably often confused system solutions with people
solutions and will now try to be more aware of my thinking about this
interrelationship.

I also loved Barry's analogy of people in organizations to schools of fish. I
have so often seen people who are performing poorly and very unhapply in one
organization (school) and when they finally leave and move to a healthier
organization become transformed into a great performer. I believe that we are
all influenced by the people we keep company with and by the system in which we
spend our time. I'm not saying that the individual is powerless in resisting
the influences of their environment, but I believe that it is extremely unlikely
that one can thrive in a sick system.
