I find this thread to be fascinating. However, I've reached a conclusion which I think
will "stick" with me for some time. . .

Education is a personal responsibility. Learning comes from a sincere desire to know
something more than what one knows today. If one can read, write, and do basic
math there isn't anything that person can't learn.

Given that we live in such a knowledge saturated society I'm not sure our school
system is really even necessary, or, at least, that it will be necessary within the next
10 to 20 years.

I've been thinking about going back to school to get a Ph.D. I had decided to do so,
because I'd love to research some of the things I've come to think about frequently.
I've changed my mind. The world is my class room, and the Internet is my teacher.
And, both cost a lot less than tuition!

Grade schools should focus on the basics, and then students should learn on their
own, or, in self-selected groups of students who share common interests.
