What's in a Mission Statement? LO9406

Keith Covan said some good things in LO9356.

And as I've been following this Mission Statement thing, I've posted a couple
of private messages (and also copied p[eople on my Mission Statement Word
List). But Keith's last statement was the trigger:

> (PS Our "motto" is "Using technology to drive business leverage."
> Do you have any idea what we do and for whom?)

I'm reminded of a client's efforts to share their basic themes and get the
input from people as they cascaded their "great ideas and themes" at the top
of the food chain (oops - meant, "organizational chart") down through the
ranks.

Comments were solicited on:

"We manage with uncompromising integrity."

Lots of management discussion about whether it was possible, always?, etc. And
it was really good stimulation for discussions of values, goals, expectations
and the like. But when this one was handed to the workers for comment, it was
rephrased a bit, to become (from their reality):

"We manipulate with inflexible righteousness."

After all, "Trust is the Residue of Promises Fullfilled." And Rome wasn't
changed in a day, either. Over the yuears, I've found this useful when
discussing missions and visions to point out that it isn't only the words,
it's also the meanings and perceptions.

Thought you might find this real, useful, and worth sharing,

For the Fun of It!
