<< I've recently started reading up about NLP and one of my books talks about
metaphors being "the key the unconscious mind", that they're like puzzles
that the unconscious mind tussles with until it finds a solution which makes
sense. Which seemed to explain to me their power. >>

Your comments just made me think of Zen koans (e.g., "What's the sound of one
hand clapping?"). Koans can be story-like (not just direct questions), but
they're designed to engage a person's mind, like your description of
metaphors. It seems that active engagement may be important to the power of
stories.
