Harold -

Thanks for the quality / empowerment war story in Change Agent Status
LO9140.

Two points:

One, your story of support is not surprising -- I've found (and said
herein before) that top management generally wants to do things
differently and better but gets isolated from the reality of pushing the
wagon. Thus they don't get the information they need, are perceived as
deaf, and make "bad" decisions. Personally, I find their intentions are
good, for the most part.

Two: I'll just cite from a letter I wrote to one of Osram-Sylvania's
District Managers last year about one of your employees. Lots of things
cascade down from the top and this is but one small example:

"Dear Mr. Mackey,

"A few days ago, I left a laptop computer sitting at the telephone
credenza at the Greenville Spartanburg Airport prior to a trip to
Chicago. On arrival in Charlotte, I discovered the computer missing and
called home to ask my wife to contact friends in the airport about
looking for it. My guess was that it was not going to be found.

"On arriving in Chicago and checking home, she informed me that David Vine
(Osram-Sylvania employee) had called from the airport reporting he had
found the computer and asking for instructions about its return. He gave
home and work telephone numbers and went out of his way to assist us.

"Needless to say, his behavior is highly ethical and honest and I'm sure
that those characteristics are evident to clients and co-workers alike.
He takes the position that he appreciated the position I was in and felt
it was the right and logical thing to do. I find he is one of those truly
exceptional people looking for ways to benefit others and acting in
extraordinary ways."

David wouldn't accept any reward and wouldn't even let me pay for the
shipping charges! Methinks this whole world operates on good people doing
good things,

For the Fun of It!
