I read this pledge (To Those Who Work With Me by Bob Carpenter) to be the
basis of a relationship which could provide those positive outcomes we all
seek. It reflects a situational approach to leadership that should be
flexible enough to enable each employee to develop his/her own style.

Exactly. In all but the most unusual cases, we must accept incremental
improvement in ourselves and our organizations as we build a base for
change. The unusual cases include significant emotional events such as are
related to survival and financial crisis.

In most departments, the incremental gain from substandard to mediocre is
well worth the effort.
