Replying to Teaching Leadership LO6850 --

[Host's Note: I had to shorten Bob's subject line. He had "This is my
style of leadrship and it works around the world!" I assume from the
context that Bob gives this to people who work with him and that his
remark "Please read... carefully" and his last paragraph are directed to
them, not to subscribers to learning-org. ...Rick]

Personal Pledge to Those Who Work With Me

The following leadership principles have served me well over the years.
Please read them carefully because this is the environment I will endeavor
to create under my stewardship.

A. I understand in advance that:

1. Good or bad morale, does not well up from below, it is managements
sole responsibility.
2. Your daily efforts will match how you perceive my concern over your
needs & welfare.
3. The organization's combined intelligence and experiences exceed mine
by at least 10,000%.
4. It will take time before I can earn your trust.
5. Your personality is not the property of this organization.

B. With the above ever-in-mind, my pledge to you is that I will:

1. Help you grow professionally through training and as a person by
being understanding.
2. Take time to discuss any work related or family personal problems
with you.
3. Resolve employee disputes, the very moment they occur.
4. Make your work easier within budget constraints.
5. Seek out your strengths and when you ask for help, strengthen your
weaknesses.

C. In addition to the above pledges, please understand that I:

1. Work for you, you do not work for me.
2. Seldom terminate anyone because it is my duty to ensure that this is
not necessary.
3. Will incite your ideas on every aspect of the business, whatever your
responsibility.
4. Must make some tough business decisions, but they will probably
include your input.
5. Encourage creativity and idea forming periods, so....feel free to
dream a little.
6. Base corporate decisions on the foremost of personal ethics and
leadership values.
7. Never scold anyone because the skills I possess are a result of the
mistakes I have made.
8. Will constantly challenge your mind because using it is one of life's
greatest pleasures.
9. Understand differences, so please do not hesitate to disagree with
me.
10. Give credit where due and accept the blame for everyone else's error
in judgment.
11. Encourage the unorthodox, imaginative and innovative, so think away.
12. May delegate responsibilities but, I am still accountable to owners
for them.
13. Continually strive to improve my values and manage by serving as an
example.

D. In exchange for the above environment, I expect you to:

1. Make decisions based on a, "If this organization were mine."
philosophy.
2. Find workable solutions for problems, the very moment they become
problems.
3. Write out your goals, select your priorities and plan your time.
4. Find a way to have fun while working at least as hard as I do.

If you agree with these principles, please initial the copy below and
return it to me. This certifies that you have read, fully understand and
accept them as they stands; and it morally obligates you if you are
treated differently than described above, to bring it to my attention.
And because you also believe in them, you will sprinkle the concepts
lavishly among those whom you lead. If you do not understand them, have a
problem with, a question about, or you believe you can improve on them,
lets talk. I would be pleased to make any reasonable adjustment that will
decrease your stress and increase the productivity of this organization.
