Replying to LO8760 --

Some years ago I had finished a heavy course of hermeneutics and joined a
conservative Presybyterian Bible study group that included several
overeducated people. They eventually threw me out. I knew Calvin better
than any of the members did, but for every question I raised, they
nervously scurried for Calvin's conclusion and didn't want to consider
anything freshly, or to understand alternatives. As I recall, I was thrown
out for sinning, but I believe that dialogue was the real reason.

Perhaps dialogue is rare because the ground is never right. Trivial
topics aren't worth talking about seriously, while serious topics can't be
talked about openly. LO seems to hover between the two. Openness means
living in a state of tension, and a lot of people find it uncomfortable.
